The intersection of art and design is deeply rooted in history and has transformed the culture of visual arts education.  To be visually literate citizens, students need to recognize, appreciate, and comprehend the persuasive impact of their visual surroundings.  This requires understanding messages communicated through social and mass media, the Internet, street murals, branded products, and advertising.  Presentation material will provide participants with resources and insights regarding the contemporary landscape, overlaps between art and design, and ways to address these ideas in the classroom.

Learn the tips and techniques used by printmakers to create crisp dark lino images from a BFA in printmaking!  Not only will you learn the how, you will create and print a lino of your own using the techniques you just learned and help you create a lesson that can spark the imagination of your students.

This will be a hands on class where each participant leaves with a copper pendant.  We will do a bit of filing, sanding, hammer texturing , and beading for our project.  Bailey will talk about teaching metalsmithing in her high school classroom (the basic tools she has and how the department has grown in her 3A school).

After attending an amazing workshop over Stop Motion in San Diego I want to share the information provided by presenter Chris Haske and share how I have implemented stop motion animation in the classroom as well as collaboration with colleagues!  I will also briefly share how I use technology in my classroom.

2A-2                Polymer Dragon Pendant

Polymer Clay is used to make a whimsical dragon with wings.  The dragon can be worn as a pendant.  Glass beads for eyes, mica powders for shimmer and a variety of textures.  High School, maybe advanced MS.

For this hands on workshop we will be learning how to use EXPRESSIVE under paintings to create a life like watercolor apple!  We will be learning some watercolor basics, as well as creating an 5x7 apple still life using EVERYDAY Crayola watercolors!

2B-1                Beads of Felt, an Adaptation of Millefiori Patterned Glass

Create magnificent felted beads using multi-colored dyed fleece, using Kool-Aid.  The beads look similar to the Italian Millefiori glass beads from medieval Venice.  Participants will have a string of the beads to wear as a necklace.  Appropriate for upper elementary and older.  Supplies will be provided.

2B-2                Local Art: Inserting Community Culture Into Your Curriculum

Bringing local art into the art classroom can engage students in ways that connect to other subjects and instills pride in community.  This workshop will introduce the benefits, process and outcomes of place-based arts education.  Participants will work collaboratively to connect communities and cultural resources with hands-on activities.

Participants will create two types of ancient weaving techniques.  Have some fun learning the over and under of finger weaving by creating a narrow band using only seven fingers.  Then hive your fingers a workout making a native weaving with yarn, beads and feathers.

Dustin Poche’ is a Midwestern multimedia artist who creates original sculptures and one of a kind fine art figures. He was formally educated at the Colorado Institute of Art. He draws inspiration from his love of period fashion and his work experience in New York, where his career involved costume design, textiles and illustration within the fashion industry.

We will explore the process of incorporating ELA standards, creativity and the power of creating a strong design in an easy to understands lesson for students that will empower them to not only understand key elements of design but the power of their own problem solving process and success.  The lesson was created and taught to 4th graders, but can be pushed to higher levels for older students.  Using easy to find materials, or low cost materials, this workshop will give you creative ideas on how to use the project to meet the new national art standards, ELA standards, uses on social media, as well as creating the environment needs to make this lesson successful.

4A-1                Gelli Arts Monoprinting

Monoprinting on a Gelli Arts Printing Plate is simple and fun!  !The Gelli Arts Plate looks and feels like gelatin, but is durable, reusable and stores at room temperature.  It’s easy to clean and always ready for printing.  Come to this workshop to try out this cool new tool!  We will also create texture places for Gelli printing.  There will be a drawing to give away six Gelli plates participants at the end of the workshop.

From implementing iPad usage to just incorporating technology – this workshop features a variety of lesson ideas that support creation, innovation, and problem solving in the art room.  Student examples featured management tips and years worth of advice on how to survive in a 1:1 school for the first time or veteran!

Created for a variety of reasons such as sharing ideas, sending out good karma or just for fun, Guerilla Art is a way of encouraging students to engage with their local visual environment by making and leaving anonymous art in public spaces.  In this workshop you will learn about the movement, see examples, hear about how it has been in art education, and participate in a Guerilla Art act.

4B-4                Good as Gold! Metal Leaf Lesson ideas and Techniques
Room 117       John Derby
This workshop explores using metal (fake gold) leaf foil in PK-12 art lessons.  I begin by overviewing this history of gilding in art, including traditional and contemporary 2D and 3D forms.  Drawing from this rich tradition, I share lesson planning strategies that use gilding in ways that can be fun and relevant to today’s art learners.  Finally, I demonstrate using metal leaf foil in traditional and novel applications.  The majority of time will be spent making a 2D or 3D artwork involving gilding.  Participants are encouraged to bring a small trinket (a non-slippery surface is best) or 2D image (e.g., art reproduction, photograph, personal artwork, collage) to gild.  Best of all, the workshop is free!

5A-2                Art & Literacy: Linking Visual Art Literacy Skills to the Written Word
Room 111       Helen Windhorst
Visual literacy has great parallels with the literacy skills that colleagues use to teach reading and writing.  Through a look at Common Core standards as well as the new core art standards, art teachers will look at ways to partner with classroom teachers and literacy specialists.  There will be short hands on activity with materials provided by Crayola.

5A-3                “Wood” You Collaborate With Us?

Come listen as we discuss our collaborative installation sculpture project that we started last school year for middle level students.  This lesson integrates technology by use of Skype and Prezi, art history, hands on sculpture creation, and collaboration across the state.  We are looking to expand our project further in the upcoming school year, so, “wood” you collaborate with us?

With eighty-four years of art teaching and experience, these award winning art educators will present a “Book in a Box” to high school and middle school art teachers.  Create your own “handout” in book format.  Cal will present the 3D box book  cover and accordion book technique.  Lynn will present 2D painting, mixed media and sculpture object techniques with emphasis on elements of design and inclusion.
